How to Control Dust and Other Allergens in the Home

Most of the time, when people in the Portland/Vancouver area think of allergy season, spring and summer come to mind. But just because pollen and other allergens are not as common during the fall and winter, that doesn’t mean you can’t have allergy symptoms.

Your home is full of other things that lead to coughing, sneezing and congestion. One of the biggest culprits is dust. Dust never stops, no matter what the calendar says.

Plus, dust tends to build up rather quickly inside our homes and after a while that dust becomes really bothersome to allergy sufferers.

Even if you dust your home every day you can’t ever get all of these tiny particles. And dust always seems to build up somewhere and cause problems, including in your air ducts.

But here are some things you can do to help control the dust buildup in your home.

  • Avoid using attic or window fans. They draw more allergens and dust into your home. Air conditioners are better when it comes to reducing dust and allergens
  • Make sure the filters in your vacuum and elsewhere are high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters
  • Avoid upholstered furniture, thick carpet and heavy drapes where dust can build up
  • Get your air ducts cleaned. Dust builds up in your home year-round, including in your air ducts. When it gets in your air ducts that dust just recirculates throughout your home

There’s no way to completely rid your home of dust and other allergens. But when you use some of these tips you can greatly reduce them. Click here to schedule your air duct cleaning appointment. Or give us a call at 503-208-8351 in Portland or at 360-852-6212 in Vancouver.
